Pairing Event Artwork

I attended my Pairings Event on July 26th at the Yarmouth County Museum on Collins Street in Yarmouth to read my two short stories I wrote for local artists, Ivan Blades and Carole Rogers. This is an annual event for writers and artists to get together and work. It was well attended and everyone enjoyed the art and food provided! Here's the paintings, short stories I wrote plus a few pictures of the event.

~There are also limited post-card editions available at the Museum for those who would like a copy for sharing or treasures. Hope you enjoy!

Dearest

Dearest,
It’s been almost four years. The last time I looked, you were a little older grayer and worse off, maybe, than before. I realized watching you are still hiding behind the mask you wore as a youth. The one I fell for, head-over-heels. Do you remember those first summer days? Basking in hot sun, watching the sea roll up to kiss your toes? Sneaking a peek at me over a cup of coffee?  The freedom of a bridle-less ride on a white horse?  So many things that brought us together, nice and not so nice...

As I sit looking out my window, remembering every word you ever said. There wasn't that many, after all. Phrases that meant the most were never uttered. They burst forth in a vibration of caring that moved the mind, body and spirit for each of us. Every embrace more entwined than the last. Time has gone by. We are different now but still the same inside. A smile crinkles up my lips. Believe that I know it’s still there. Don't think for a moment it will ever stop. We build our relationship on that what we cannot touch with our hands. Speak your truth, if that’s what you desire. No matter what is said, love will return, every morning, in a brilliant white light.

Drum

Darkness. The white crescent moon hangs still in the night sky. Pulling my sweater closer, I walk in silence down the twisted path. The shadows of the forest never hampered my direction. After a few minutes, I hear the ocean. Steadily it rolls in the salty air. Arriving on the beach, the waters dance in the dim moon light. Putting a match to my all-ready prepared pile of driftwood, the flames quickly engulfed the dry timbers, warming my hands as I listened to the woods behind me moan in tune to the waves. Slowly my friends began to arrive though the forest path, each drawn there for their own reason. We talk of our time away from each other, bringing a mixture of knowledge for reflection.
An owl hoots in the old black spruce as clouds pass over. A prayer is offered to Mother Earth as we commence, vibrating the body, mind and spirits of all participants. I start to tap my drum as the other drummers begin. We blend in rhythmic tones. Our hearts combining as one was our souls unite in a sacred bliss of rhythms. As we wind thru the journey of the music, we all reach out to our Master, asking for direction, blending the love and wisdom of ancient ancestors into harmony. Winding down to a soft tap of the drum skin, we end our chant. After hugging, we part ways, again, leaving the dying fire, each belonging to the Sun and Moon cycles, we all agree.

A Nova Star Cruises Voyage!

I was privileged to have a turn trip cruise July 8 & 9 on the Nova Star from Yarmouth. Our day started foggy, with the bug light at Bunker's Island, John's Cove beach and Cape Forchu Light house showing themselves thru the mist self on the pass by.

The water's were fairly calm on the crossing to Portland. I was able to take advantage of the Aqua Room activities which included a new release movie, Monument Men and a on-ship Bingo game, winning, too!
The food was wonderful in Fathons Buffet and the formal Dining room was wonderful as well. There's also a sport's bar with 2 large screen TV's for the guy's. I liked the piano lounge, personally, at the stern of the ship and was able to watch porpoises jumping all the way to USA.
I was invited to visit the bridge of the ship and meet the first Mate to see how the vessel is run. I even got to sit in Captain John Payne's  chair!

We arrived in Portland just after 7pm, checked thru customs and were back on the ocean in time to see the harbour at sun-set. It was beautiful!

I tried my luck in the casino, watched the disco for a while, drank a Labatt's Blue and settled in the the night trip home, rocked to sleep by the waves ♥
That morning I enjoyed a buffet breakfast with just about everything you can think of and was home by 8:30am. Loved it and can't wait to travel the Nova Star again soon.

Here's some other shots of the trip. Enjoy!

Crows

"A old friend"

I’ve always loved crows and rescued one as a child. It had an injured wing which healed over a week, then was released back to the yard behind Bonavesta house where I lived.
I never knew my father that well growing up. I was raised by my grand-mother till I was 16 years old, lived with my bio mother for 2 horrible years, then ventured out into life by myself.
I was talking to an old family friend who related to me a story of my father and the crows he used to tend as a child. My father, Bob Wells, was a great animal lover, who brought home every stray he found as a young child. At age 9 years,he started feeding the local crows hanging around the train tracks on Water Street, Yarmouth, staying to watch them feed. After many times, he started to talk to them, calling ‘crow, crow, and crow’. They would stop to look his way, noticing him there not far from the crumbs. Eventually, Bob tried sitting not far with crumbs beside him. At first the crows ignored him. He would wait patiently, then leave after a wait, taking those crumbs with him. The crows noticed this, of course. Greed got the best of some and they would sneak close enough to grab a few then fly off. My father smiled knowingly… Several weeks went by, when one day a crow got right next to Bob. He never moved, but spoke softly to the black beauty. After several days, he held out his hand with crumbs and waited again… one crow got very brave and ate out of his hand one day. This became a daily ritual till one day the crow Ate the crumbs then Dad tipped his finger and patted the smooth black feathers on his neck. He flew off but returned the next day for his hand feeding. with a quick pat. Then finally one morning, young Bob waited for the crow to arrive. When he was done his crumbs Bob quickly reached down and grabbed the crow’s leg! A great confusion of crow screams, flapping feathers and laughing arouse. The local Water street workers came from their salty shacks to witness Dad catching his first live crow! He tied a string to his leg and ‘flew’ the crow home to his bewildered mother. She was shocked and cried. It was bad luck to bring a crow into the house to live and not only that, but the crow was mad, hurt and not longer trusted him. I’ll let him go then. He took the crow out into the back of the house on Main Street and cut the string from his leg. Mad, the crow flew to the top of the house to tell him off one last time before disappearing back toward Water Street.

The crows never trusted him that much again but they would still come and wait for the crumbs, from the roof next door, till Bob left. Smiling…

Tree Fall

A photo of the black spruce fallen in the wind storm the other week... just missing my bedroom window! Thankfully, everything in and around the house was undamaged by the fall. My alarm had just went off at 5am.Lying there in bed I wondered if I should get up when suddenly there was a large snap out-side. "Crap! Here comes the tree!" I said, just as it hit the side of the house.

Maud Lewis -looking for Maud

I spent the day Saturday driving with my friends, Sandra Phinney, a local writer and Vickie Hamilton, also a publish author, to view the 'supposed' last resting place of Maud Lewis. Maud was a Nova Scotia Folk artist that lived in the Yarmouth/Digby area back during the 1900's. Her life was a simple one, very poor, living in a one room house some times with her friend, Everette Lewis and some times living in Yarmouth with relatives. She disappeared during the late 1970's after leaving her estranged husband, never to be seen again. No one know for sure what happened to her, but her art lives on to this day.

We viewed the grave site in North Range Rd, I tried to imagine her presence there. Personally, I would be surprised if any of the people listed on the grave stone had their final resting place in that cemetery. Not sure why that impression...
(Note that the birth/death dates are not all mentioned on stone.)Link here

Stopping to look at the information center in Digby, we looked at the re-creation of some of Maud's folk art decorating the building. It was wonderfully done ♥
After we ate lunch at the Fundy restaurant on Main Street in Digby. The food was wonderful and well presented. I had the oven baked haddock with a flaky crust plus a Cesar salad. For dessert, it was key lime pie with whipped creme, hummmmm!

After taking in the restaurant, we went to the local quilting shop,Complete-Fabrication, to meet the Digby Strippers - a quilting bee and view the quilt made in honor of my great-Aunt Maud Lewis. The ladies were lovely and chatty. I'm looking forward to see them again soon : ).
Here's some photo's of my adventure. Hope you enjoy!
