Crystal Balls- a History

I was taking the sun-shine and a cup  of tea early this morning when I noticed my crystal ball on my dressing stand had caught the rising sun. I watched it for a few minutes, full of light with a brilliant radiance glowing around it. I have used one for friends who wanted scrying for years and I'm always amazed the 'light' they bring : )

Here's a bit of history about them...

The History of the Crystal Ball

psychic-ball
We have probably all seen a crystal ball at one time or another and know they are associated with psychics. Psychics use crystal balls to foresee or foretell future events or to discover hidden knowledge, usually by the interpretation of omens or through the aid of supernatural powers. In other words, crystal balls are used as an aid to clairvoyance. But how did it all start?
Celtic druids are thought to be the first to have used crystals for the purpose of divination. Later, people — such as fortunetellers, wizards, seers, gypsies and psychics — began using crystals to see the future during medieval times in Europe. Early crystal balls were sometimes made from beryllium aluminum silicate because it was transparent, but they were later made out of rock crystal. Christians of the 5th century thought that evil spirits and witches inhabited crystal balls and that any message divined from them came from the devil. However, by the 17th century, German priests would often put a crystal ball on the altar during prayers.
The act of “seeing” things — past, present or future — is called “scrying.” When scrying is done through the use of crystals, a crystal ball or another transparent medium, it is called “crystal gazing” or “crystallomancy.” Some psychics claim to see images in the crystal ball, while others believe that the transparent quality of the gemstone helps them clear their minds sufficiently so that information about the future becomes apparent to them. This information may then be used to make important decisions concerning finances, love, business, travel and relationships.
Throughout history, children were often used as intermediaries in scrying. It was believe that they were pure of spirit and more open to communication from other worlds. Children were also considered less likely to try and defraud people.
Though crystal balls are now used by psychics and entertainers, they were used at one time by a scientist named Dr. John Dee, who lived in England in the 1500s. As a consultant to Queen Elizabeth I — as well as a geographer, mathematician, astrologer and astronomer — he used crystal balls in his work involving divination, Hermetic philosophy and alchemy. However, by 1824, a law was passed in England making divination illegal, punishable with three months of hard labor. A quartz ball that once belonged to Dee now resides in the British Museum.
Scrying devices, such as mirrors, have been mentioned in literature for hundreds of years, including Geoffrey Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales” and Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” and “Measure for Measure.” Roger Bacon, who wrote in the 13th century, mentioned crystal balls in several of his stories, allowing characters to see what was happening in faraway places. In more recent times, J.R.R. Tolkien includes crystal balls called “palatirs” in “The Lord of the Rings.” These crystal balls allow the characters to see and communicate with one another from long distances.
In England during Victorian times, something called the “garden gazing ball” became popular. A version of a crystal ball, a garden gazing ball was a colored-glass globe that was supposed to reflect the beauty of the garden and produce a peaceful and calm state of mind for those who gazed into it. Perhaps just the state of mind that might allow them to “see” things they wouldn’t otherwise be able to see.
Crystal balls, because they are so recognizable, are often used on stage as props by magicians or mentalists. This type of performance is called “crystal gazing” or C.G. Claude Alexander, also known as “Alexander the Crystal Seer” was one of the most famous performers who used a crystal ball for this type of act.
Crystals have been used by many different cultures throughout history for the purpose of healing. The basis for crystal therapy is the belief that a crystal gives off vibrations that affect the flow of energy surrounding it, which can help resolve issues with the body or its aura. Though people of the past believed that crystal balls were inhabited by spiritual beings, it is now more commonly believed that the vibrations of the crystals interact with the electromagnetic field that surrounds our bodies, perhaps helping us to heal or perhaps helping us to “see.”

Morning Walk

I was feeling well this morning so I took walk down town early to go to the Farmers market. The Main st of Yarmouth was busy, with people hurrying to work. I watched them greet each other on the street from the park bench on Alma street corner happily. We do have a pleasant friendly town, I thought. The Nova Star ferry traffic was just starting to emerge. And Tim Horton's was full of coffee drinkers taking in the sight of the tourist looking back at them. After wandering down to the bank for cash, I stopped to say hello to some old friends I hadn't seen in years. I realize that country living had separated me a bit from old aquaintances... It was good to just look around and see the 'old crowd'.

Peace- an Entity

"There is no trust more sacred than the one the world holds with children. There is no duty  more important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected, that their lives are free from fear and want and that they grow up in peace."
~Kofi Annan

Many things I remember as a teenager. One was the constant challenges to be like class mates who were out every night partying, racing around in cars and fighting for territory in our small 1970's town. Being brought up in  Catholic home with older women, every night was vespers at the church, supper with the Sisters or a visit to Brother Antonio's for a talk on God/vespers with the Fransican Friars..
I felt very left out as even my closes friends were caught up in dating, sneaking out after curfew, telling the tales next day at school.

I decided to try and attract a angel to help me thru this time of growing turmoil. Many prayers were said for a understanding enity that could explain why the 1970's world was so full of drastic change. Drugs, war, murder in the streets, people  trying to have proverse young men and women into the sex trade. ...I know...it goes on today...but when your a teenager its all too close and real...

My enity first showed up in the refuge where I volenteered after school. I was up stairs going into a room used for storage for the friars. It appeared as a voice at first behind me in the hall. I turned to see a dark shadow. I wasn't afraid. I asked its name.
It replied that I had called it to come. It was my Peace I had hoped for.
It spoke for a few minutes about what I had been worried about till  one of the other refuge came up the stairs, screamed and Peace disappeared. Many questions were asked about what had happened but none explained as I didn't know what had happened. I thought only I could see the spector.
It wasn't till a few days later, Peace showed up again. I was in the vespers room alone ,sitting quiety , when it appeared. It spoke of Wisdom and tried to show me what I could do to help myself thru the time of change. My favorite quotes came from the book of Wisdom in the old testament about the importance of woman ,judgement and the expectation that we are suppose to be protected  by the men we love, not exploited.
Peace spoke of silence when in worry, finding a internal center to look out at the situations I was experiencing to see what the next step might be to avoid a unwanted problem. Peace told me it could stay with me always, all I had to do was want it.
Many times I have called  on Peace in my life. It appears as a quiet in the storms that pass. I watch as the clouds roll by, finding calm in its arms and un-ending security.
My Peace is always with me...

Wisdon 3:12-"Wisdom is brilliant, she never fades. By those who love her, she is readily seen, by those who seek her, she is readily found."

Peace, peace, to those far and near,”
says the Lord. “And I will heal them.”
Isaiah 5:19

Raining...again

A Rainy View from the Front Door

I'm stuck inside today working on a poem...Seems that I'm feeling a bit better and have been accused of walking too far from home yesterday. I went early morning for about 2 1/2 miles then again in the afternoon venturing down to frost park for a bit of sunshine to watch the children playing around the fountain... whats wrong with that! Today I'm stuck in! I am working on a poem for my AllPoetry.com. Its coming slowly as I haven't thought of writing in MONTHS! Hoping my creativity will return...

Dido - Here with Me (Official Video)

Looking for Something

I've been off work on sick leave sense late June and don't look like I'll be getting back anytime soon. My symptoms are still there except the bloating is gone for the most part. I'm still very weak and trying to walk everyday for 30 minutes or so. Its all I can do to drag myself around the block. I did see the doctor on Friday and my prognoses doesn't look that good for getting there anytime soon.
I decided its time to work on short stories and poems again. I sent a fellow tenant out to buy me some new pencils and a work book to pass the time. I'm hoping my past dragons will speak and the light will send words to tell the tale.....life to the dragons will return....

Summer Fun? Blaaaaaa!

Well...I;m back on-line, for now, but have spent most of the summer sick with a un-known infection in my stomach lining. I started back in June just after I went back to work at the ferry terminal. By July I was off and I still am taking tests( ultra sound, cat scan ,blood work, ect) but no answer yet.  My stomach was swelled so bad at one point that I looked pregnant!  Its gone down a bit now but nothing fits right.
The kids have been great  and have taking me out many times for shopping, hospital visits and a family wedding at Ellenwood park. Most of my time has been spent sleeping in the house with 0 energy.

In my depressed state, I tried to make a visit to see my 1st husband in prison.as I hadn't seen him for 7 years. He's there on a life sentence with no hope of ever getting out...just to make me feel better. What did I find out? He;s not there anymore....probably died and me not told. Crap. I decided to wear his ring in protest. I was supposed to be notified if he died or was executed.
We were married back in 1977 on my birthday. A month later he was catch and incarcerated. I had known him sense a infant and he was there most of the time taking care of me with my Great Grand Mother Adele sense birth.
When I was 6 years old and he was 10 years, he was kidnapped from the apartment he lived in with a guardian and not seen for years. He was made a part of a cult in New York State that preyed on children. All the member were kept drugged, molested and afraid to tell anything as noone could be trusted in the small out-skirted community they lived in. When he escaped at 15 years old, he spent most of the time on the street till he found his way back to Yarmouth1971, hiding out with people in Yarmouth. In A year later , we found each other again. And spent many happy times filled with fun with my friends. When I turned 16, we decided  we would get married.
After, We found out he was accused of killing 40 people at a party in Albany with poison  plus a child boiled alive. It wasn't til we were married that the law catch up with him as the wedding certificate was registered with Canadian Goverment.
Did he do it? I'm not sure if the person I knew would or not....
So Bobby James, I miss you still...
